A Clockwork Orange

Now that you’ve got a taste of all things red, the next color on the spectrum is orange. This color has been everywhere recently, and Pantone even named Tangerine Tango (17-1463) the Color of the Year for 2012! The citrus hue is cheery enough to beat away the winter blues, and it feels right at home in the summer heat.

In regards to color theory, orange is said to combine the energy of red with the optimism of yellow. Orange is youthful, warm, and invigorating. Just seeing a glass of OJ at the breakfast table is enough to perk you up in the morning. Orange is known to increase the oxygen supply to the brain, stimulating mental activity! It’s no surprise that so many creative companies have used orange in their logos.

In addition to it’s creative benefits, orange is a wise decision for a company wishing to brand itself as affordable and approachable, because it is less aggressive and more humble than red. If you need any more evidence to orange’s effectiveness, just look at the list of companies who have incorporated it into their logos.

Did these logos get you thinking?

This is the first post about the color orange in our series about color theory and design inspiration. What’s up next? Orange websites and their usability.
